“Smooth Sailing” adorns the front awning of the Bay Gallery, spanning its brim and reaching to the façade wall of the gallery.
Inspired by the leadlight /stained glass windows which are scattered throughout the gallery, the sculpture incorporates a new technique which Leasha has been developing over the past couple of years, a labour intensive technique spot-welding stainless steel round bar and braided stainless steel wire with a stunning result. The sculpture which took over 2 months to create and contains over 7,500 individual welds and 550 metres of balustrade wire.
Smooth Sailing was commissioned by Bay Gallery owner Victoria Bilger and is the 3rd public artwork installed on the Central Coast by Ms Craig. In 2019 the monumental bronze sculpture, ‘Brothers In Arms’, the centre piece for the War Memorial at Terrigal Foreshore was installed, followed by the highly polished stainless steel ‘Eternal Flame’ installed on the Cenotaph at Club Toukley.
